Bach was orphaned at ten in the German town of Eisenach and raised by an older brother. As a young man he once walked some 250 miles to hear a famous organist play. He spent his last twenty-seven years as cantor in Leipzig, where for stretches he produced a new cantata nearly every week.
He was a working craftsman with a house full of children, twenty in all, and he saw no divide between labor, family, and music. His letters have that grounded steadiness.
