Claude Monet grew up in Le Havre selling caricatures until a local painter coaxed him outdoors to paint what light actually does. His Impression, Sunrise gave Impressionism its name, and his last decades at Giverny were given to a garden and its water lilies.
He painted the same haystacks and cathedral over and over because the light never repeated itself. His letters have that faith in second looks: he will want to know what the morning looked like from your window, and he means it as a serious question.
