How it works
A correspondence, not a worksheet
The figure writes first
The first letter is written from what you tell us about your student. It tells true stories from the figure's life and ends with one easy question.
Your student writes back by hand
Every letter arrives with a reply card showing exactly how: on their own paper, mailed back, or photographed and sent in. The writing happens on paper, not on a screen.
Every reply is answered
Each new letter responds to what your student wrote and weaves in more of the figure's real history. At least one letter a month; faster when your student writes back. A person reviews every letter before it ships.

Social studies and writing, in one exchange
History, from the people who lived it
Each correspondence is grounded in the documented life of one figure: Albert Einstein, Eleanor Roosevelt, Frederick Douglass, Jane Austen, and a roster of more than 70 in all. Events, places, and choices from the figure's real biography, told in the first person, at your student's level.
Writing, with a real audience
Students compose replies to a correspondent who actually answers. Audience awareness, asking and answering questions, sustaining an exchange across months: writing practiced the way letters have always taught it. Supports ELA writing and social studies standards for grades 2 and up.

Each package covers one student and one pen pal. The letter count is what you buy; the pace is set by your student. Prices include shipping, and scholarship families pay the same price as everyone else. No surcharge, ever.

Using your program's funds
Every program orders a little differently
Some programs use a marketplace, some pay vendors directly against an invoice, and some reimburse a purchase. Email mark@historicalpenpals.com with your program's name and your student's grade, and we reply with exactly what your program needs: a typed invoice, our W-9, or a direct order.
Refunds for purchases made with scholarship or ESA funds are returned to the student's scholarship account, never to the parent.

Historical Pen Pals is a materials vendor. Products are the fixed-length letter packages listed above, at fixed prices with shipping included. All correspondence is physical mail only; no employee has in-person, phone, or live-online contact with students. The short answers
Who actually writes the letters?
Each letter is written in the figure's documented voice, grounded in their real biography and personalized to your student, and a person reviews every letter before it ships.
How personalized is it?
The first letter is written from what you tell us about your student: their name, their interests, what they are curious about. Every letter after that responds to what they wrote.
What ages does it fit?
Grades 2 and up. The reading level and the questions are matched to the student, and each correspondence covers one student and one pen pal, so siblings each get their own.
What if my student stops writing?
Quiet is normal. If a month passes without a reply, the figure writes again first. Letters never expire, and the correspondence picks back up whenever your student does.
Does it renew or recur?
No. Each package is a fixed number of letters at a fixed price. When the letters are done, it is done, unless you choose to add more.
