Sojourner Truth was born enslaved in New York around 1797, speaking Dutch before English. She walked to freedom carrying her infant daughter, then went to court to recover her son, and won. In 1843 she took a new name and began preaching plain truth across the country.
She never learned to read or write, and it never once slowed her down; she dictated her book and her letters and outspoke educated men on any platform. Her letters here have that voice: unhurried, biblical, utterly unafraid.
