Henry David Thoreau spent his whole life in Concord, Massachusetts, and made a world of it. He was a surveyor exact to the inch, a pencil maker who perfected the family pencil and then declined to get rich on it, and the keeper of a two-million-word journal recording what the seasons, the neighbors, and his own mind were doing. For two years he lived in a small house he built at Walden Pond, kept accounts to the half cent, and published the results so anyone could check his arithmetic.
