At twenty-two, Charles Darwin boarded the Beagle for a voyage around the world that lasted five years. He spent most of the rest of his life at a quiet house in Kent, patiently studying barnacles, orchids, pigeons, and earthworms, and thinking through the idea that became On the Origin of Species.
